Midnight, and sleep is evading me.
I was tired at 22:00, switched off the light and fell fast asleep but woke up two hours later! I wonder why this happens? But over the years, when it does, I switch on the light, get out of bed, walk around a bit and then return to read or do something to take my mind off trying to sleep.
Eventually I fall asleep a little later and wake up refreshed.
11 August was always a day that was celebrated when I was married, as it was my ex husband’s birthday. He was exactly 3 months older than I was, so being Afrikaans, I would always tease him for those three months and call him “U” instead of “jy”.
For those who don’t speak the language, this is just a polite term to address one’s elders.
I was divorced in 1994, and yet I still think of those 21 married years with a smile on my face. I was blessed with a kind, hard working and loving husband… but unfortunately his love extended to other women too…. Hence our parting.
He died a few years ago.
The week has been great. Got to visit the foot man in Hillcrest and although he was happy to take a cast of my feet with the intention of making a set of inner supports, he is not confident that this will ease the pain in any way. So I paid the R2,400 for these and will be able to collect them next week.
He is apparently the guy that most of the athletes use and comes highly recommended. Holding thumbs.
Tenpin was fun with 11 of us pitching up on Tuesday. Another of the ladies enticed her husband to join as well, so the group is slowly changing.
In the quiz I attended there two weeks ago, one of the questions asked was, ‘what do you call it when you get three consecutive strikes in the game of tenpin?’ I learnt it was ‘a Turkey. Well, I got a Turkey today!
I was ever so proud of this achievement.
Having the highest score of the day, I was given a voucher to have a free game next time. This is rather exciting and I might just start playing league again. I always loved the competition.
The only problem is that there are no morning league games any more and it would mean I would need to go out at night on my own. This is a frightening thought as the area where the building housing tenpin is not in a good spot.
Might try to organise a lift with someone else.
Today was a perfect day weather wise. After spinning on the balcony I ended up going down to Baggies for a toasted cheese sandwich for breakfast. Bet’s cousin who lives in the same block as she does, came down with her husband and we sat talking for three hours.
The sun was so hot that I have visibly burnt across the chest. Won’t be able to stay out for that long in the summer.
Had my 6 weekly hair trim at Headgirls, and then met with another friend at The Yard, for coffee. She had a quiche and salad while I settled on a meringue which had a cheesecake filling and decorated with pomegranate seeds, blueberries and strawberries.
Although very sweet, the meringue was crispy and divine. My sugar intake for the week.
Called in at the little soap shop on the same premises and was intrigued by the selection on his shelves.
Funnily enough he is catering for the African Market, which I found strange. The soaps are infused with all the traditional herbs that they have been using traditionally for a variety of medicinal uses. I must say that the smells were pungent and appealing. I think they might be bought by overseas visitors as well, for their uniqueness.
As Petros signed the attendance register before going off on Monday, he made a point of telling me that, as tomorrow is Women’s day, he would be popping in to bring me a present. I laughed when he told me this, and smilingly asked him if he had a new flower for me? No, he uttered, it is a surprise and I must wait to discover what it was.
Well, I didn’t hear from him as he was doing some renovations to a flat for someone in Isipingo. But I was invited up to a friends flat for drinks later in the afternoon.
While sitting there, Petros knocked on her door, asking if she knew where I was as he had a gift for me. I went downstairs to see what this mysterious gift could be…
Outside my door was a large framed picture of a lovely lady reclined on a stunning couch which is emerald green.
The soft colours are so pretty, and it is actually a jig saw puzzle which has been professionally framed and has glass protection. On the back he has written, ‘this is from Petros’.
My heart was so touched by this gesture. Where he found it, or bought it from, I didn’t ask, but I have decided to hang it on the balcony where it will have pride of place.
During my 50 years of having people work for me, I have never been given a gift by any of them, although I have generously helped each and every one of them. How kind and thoughtful this was.
