#Insomnia …
Two thirty in the morning and I am wide awake after 3 hours of deep sleep. I wish I knew what wakes me at this ungodly hour! I lie quietly for a while, willing myself to go back to sleep, but to no avail.
So here I am making the most of this extra time.
#Conure …
On Saturday I found an old memory stick with compilations of music on it. I am one of the very few people I know who doesn’t have music , the radio or TV on throughout the day. In fact, I prefer the silence.
But there was loud activity going on at Lords which I was aware of, the wind was howling and this led me to look for some music to play to ‘deaden’ the outside noise.
I received a telephone call from Cape Town and was in the middle of the conversation, when all of a sudden I heard Ruby Friday, my lovely green cheeked Conure who has been gone for over two years, talking.
After the telephone call ended I went into the lounge and replayed the section of music that had been playing.
In between the songs, I found the track where I had taped the little bird one night after I had covered her cage and was saying good night to her.
She was such a character
She would repeat whatever I said to her. Very early on in her life, when she would bite my finger, I would reprimand her, in a forceful voice, saying: “Don’t bite mommy, you’ll go back to your cage”.
Once she was able to repeat this, she would climb under my blankets, approach my leg and, from down there, the same voice would be heard with the same intonation… and then she would bite my leg knowing full well what my reaction would be!
She loved it when I used to call her my darling, or my baby and each time – she would continue saying it, waiting for me to repeat it over and over again. I knew exactly what she was saying, but others, when hearing her speak were not that impressed.
Thinking back on the various birds I have owned I always smile, but the disaster with the last two budgies has made me 100 percent certain that I won’t be getting another bird. But hearing Ruby Friday yesterday certainly brought back many happy memories.
The weather…
Today the weather was pleasant, but I was warmly dressed in denims and one of the lovely blue pure wool jerseys that I inherited from Nikki. I wore one of her beautiful silk scarfs as well. She certainly had excellent taste in clothing, and I am blessed to have been given so many of these gems.
Two of my friends and I had made plans to meet at Lords and Legends for their traditional Sunday lunch, which I absolutely adore. I got there at 11:30 and Priscilla was already seated at one of the outdoor tables.
Every Sunday there are two very talented musicians who play music from my younger days. I hate to admit this, I have never known what they call their band, but they are really fantastic. Sadly, I believe, that they have been offered another spot somewhere on the Bluff and yesterday was their last performance. They will be missed.
Mosquito…
I had a bloody mosquito in my bedroom on Friday night which was so annoying. It remained hidden until I switched off the light, and then that dreadful high pitched whine started as it descended towards my face.
I have a true aversion to three insects, flies, cockroaches and mosquitoes. I shot upright in bed, switched on the light and, armed with my slipper, I tried to find the elusive little bugger.
Couldn’t see her at all. Got out the Peaceful Sleep (What a misnomer that is) wiped it all over my face and tried to settle down.
I was dive bombed twice more before I went to the kitchen and returned to bed with the large net that I use to cover food. I draped this loosely around my head and this kept me safe for the rest of the night.
Imagine my horror when on Saturday night the same situation occurred. This time I got the spray can of Doom, another misnomer, as it didn’t do the trick either, but I sprayed it very lightly because I hate using it, especially in the bedroom.
Fortunately I spied a little black spot on the cupboard which seemed out of place. I approached it armed with my feather pillow, a viscous blow, and thank goodness, managed to kill it. When summer comes it is much easier to keep the mosquitoes at bay by using the ceiling fan but it is too cold to use it now.
Humour…
Now for a bit of humour. One of my friends, Colleen Tomsett, shared this from Weird and Amazing Things, and I thought it was good enough to share.
Graham Martin is in Hospital: Who the hell is GRAHAM?
Well Graham is the geezer who got home late one night and Helen his wife, says. “Where the hell have you been?”
Graham replies. “I was getting a tattoo!”
“A tattoo?” She frowned. “What kind of tattoo did you get?”
“I got a hundred dollar note on my privates.” He said proudly.
“What the hell were you thinking?” She said, shaking her head in disgust. “Why on earth would a Chartered Accountant get a hundred dollar note tattooed on his privates?”
“Well, one, I like to watch my money grow.
Two, once in a while I like to play with my money.
Three, I like how money feels in my hand.
And, lastly, instead of you going out shopping, you can stay right here at home and blow a hundred dollars anytime you want.”
Graham is now in The Critical Care Unit, Room 233. No visitors until further notice……………
